Luxurious Vacations for Fall in Mexico

Luxury Travel Guide

The season of the changing leaves brings Wanderlust for many, and where better to wander then amongst beautiful towns dripping with history. We created this luxury travel guide to outline some of our recommendations for luxurious destinations in Mexico for the fall. Let’s begin:

Destination 1: Zacatecas

Natural and Living History Combined

Zacatecas in September

What we like about Zacatecas in Fall:

Few locations in Mexico shine like the silver city of Zacatecas, the once richest state and silver capital of Mexico. Today the mines still produce precious minerals as Zacatecas City (the state capital) joins Guanajuato and Taxco on the “Routa de Plata” or silver route. When looking to stay in Zacatecas, here are a few keys to remember:

How to dress: During fall you’ll find temperatures between 75-50 degrees, pack your favorite lambskin jacket or suede - but don’t forget an umbrella on the off chance of a summer shower.

Where to stay: The iconic Quinta Real Zacatecas Hotel (photographed above) is a must stay when visiting. The hotel resides in living history, inhabiting the restored San Pedro Bullfighting Arena from the 19th century.

What to see: Zacatecas retains its early architecture, so walk through the city to visit the Museum of Francisco Goitia’s gardens or visit the Mina el Eden (Eden Mine) for a subterranean experience.

Where to Dine: While we recommend the dining at the Quinta Real Hotel, it may also entice your palate to visit the Restaurante El Paraíso for an aesthetically pleasing culinary experience.

Visit the beautiful town and enjoy the rich cultural heritage in September, it remains a fantastic place to celebrate Mexican Independence Day (September 16th), especially in years when the Statewide Fair is occurring. A unique experience for anyone.

Destination 2: Oaxaca

Cultural Relevancy and Boutique Luxury

Oaxaca in October

What we like about Oaxaca in Fall

A city full of color and culture where one can find colonial, Zapotec, and Mixtec structures: Oaxaca is unique in its offerings. July holds a month long cultural festival called the Guelaguetza featuring indigenous history from Pre-Mexico. However, to get away from the summer heat and in honor of the recently finalized Oaxaca Film Festival, we chose Oaxaca city for our choice of fall vacations.

How to dress: While Oaxaca has a lower temperature in October it is still a desert climate with highs up to 85 degrees even in summer. We recommend some breathable cotton with Chelsea boots and loafers.

Where to stay: Among the many options for hospitality, we recommend the Hotel Sin Nombre (the no name hotel) for a breathtaking modern aesthetic. Interested in minimalist luxury rentals, enjoy the Casa Criollo for a private stay.

What to see: Soak in the culture and the country with a mix of destinations such as the Museum of Oaxacan Painters or step outside the city to discover the natural wonder of the Hierve de Agua calcified waterfall remains.

Where to dine: Enjoy upscale dining at Los Danzantes or opt for a local rotating menu at Criollo by Chef Luis Arellano.

The development of Oaxaca has created a wide appeal for those wishing to experience the blend of history that makes up Mexico. Enjoy culinary mosaicas alongside elaborate textiles and experience the magic at this unique fall destination.

Destination 3: Guanajuato

Explore new heights our hometown

Guanajuato in November

What we like about Guanajuato in November

Fans of J.L. Rocha might know that we come from Guanajuato, and that this city is dear to our hearts. Immerse yourself in the city history while enjoying cultural phenomenons. Avoid the summer rains and enjoy the cooling temperatures in November during one of the most gorgeous festivals of the year.

How to Dress: While daytime temperatures will stay in the low 70s, stay warm in the evenings in your favorite leather jacket. Denim is okay, and be prepared to enjoy the city by walking.

Where to stay: Enjoy boutique accommodations with a colorful view in the Casa Del Rector hotel’s presidential suite. For a more streamlined hospitality feeling stay we recommend the 1850 hotel for its modern amenities in historic architecture.

What to see: Visiting Guanajuato in November means enjoying the views of the International Festival of the Balloon started in 2002 and hailed as one of the top three cultural festivals in the world, individuals from across the international community gather to fly hot air balloons through the sky. If you’re interested in local attractions, take a drive to nearby San Javier to visit the Castillo Santa Cecilia and take in the views of this early Mexican castle.

Where to dine: Enjoy a traditional palate immersed in the city center at the Casa Valdez Restaurant and for a picturesque lunch at the Jardín de Los Milagros for surprising outdoor delights.

However you choose to explore the city: Guanajuato is rich with cultural heritage, colonial architecture, and stunning views. We hope you enjoy our home town as much as we do, and close out the fall season with the magnificence of the balloon festival.
