Quotes that inspire Mexican Artistry

J.L. Rocha Collections.

J.L. Rocha was created when a family of historic artisans decided to re-kindle the craft for a new generation and country. Our brand was born of the genes that have fueled Mexican artistry for over 300 years - hard work, respect for tradition, and family. We compiled a series of quotes that exemplify the spirit of Mexican leather craft - and our inspiration to create modernized classics that bring to light the beauty of what our artisans can create. Join us below as we dissect these quotes.

¿Que es el lujo mexicano?

What is Mexican Luxury?

The Bond of Handmade Objects

Mexican author and diplomat Octavio Paz Loza recognized as one of the major Latin American writers of the 20th century. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1990 work, was awarded the 1981 Miguel de Cervantes Prize, and won the 1982 Neustadt International Prize for Literature. When it comes to Mexican artistry, he understood the value of the connection that comes with a handmade beautiful object.

“Hecho con las manos, el objeto artesanal guarda impresas, real o metafóricamente, las huellas digitales del que lo hizo. Estas huellas no son la firma del artista, no son un nombre; tampoco son una marca. Son más bien una señal: la cicatriz casi borrada que conmemora la fraternidad original de los hombres. Hecho con las manos, el objeto artesanal está hecho para las manos; no sólo lo podemos ver, sino que lo podemos palpar. a la obra de arte la vemos, pero no la tocamos.”

- Octavio Paz

English Translation:

The words of Octavio Paz resonate with us as we try to forge a new path in connection with the global pursuits that have led us to understand the connections we all share. In the English translation we see the value of the unspoken bond between the artisan and the consumer.

“Made with the hands, the handmade object keeps printed, real or metaphorically, the fingerprints of the one who made it. These prints are not the artist's signature, they are not a name; nor are they a brand. They are rather a sign: the almost erased scar that commemorates the original brotherhood of men. Made with the hands, the handmade object is made for the hands; not only can we see it, but we can feel it. We see the work of art, but we do not touch it.”

- Octavio Paz

We love the idea of handmade products being infused with the history of their journey. J.L. Rocha believes that each handmade leather product we create is uniquely crafted not only by artisans but also the life that was given so that these beautiful product can exist. The art is the story coming together from start to finish, every scar, every stitch - they all journeyed to meet you - that is the art you can’t see.

The Technical Expertise of Mexican Artisans

Rufino Tamayo was an artist that traveled throughout Mexico and the United States in the mid century. His surrealist influences created unique artworks that rang true to his heritage and revolutionized Mexican art. When it came to expertise and art - his words were more technical than inspirational.

“No creo en la inspiración. Hay que ejecutar el oficio como un artesano. La técnica se enriquece con el trabajo manual, con el dominio y habilidad de la mano que maneja la herramienta.”

- Rufino Tamayo

He not only denies the act of inspiration, but also compliments the technical skills of working craft. These words move our hearts and hands to work hard to commemorate our artisans. The English translation should provide a glimpse at the expertise that our artisans exhibit.

“I don't believe in inspiration. You have to execute the trade like a craftsman. The technique is enriched by manual work, with the mastery and skill of the hand that handles the tool.”

- Rufino Tamayo

Our artisans have spent years developing crafts that have been past down through generations. We respect and value those traditions and skills that create a work of art unlike any other. This quote reminds us that the technical prowess that is required for this type of beauty is hard to obtain, and a masterful endeavor indeed.

The Soul that Should be Heard

Julio Cesares is a Spanish philosopher, writer, diplomat and violinist. Spain is part of the history of Mexico and part of Mexican history when it comes to shoemaking and leather goods. The words of Julio Cesares light a fire in us that reminds us of the beauty of individualism and art. Truly infusing yourself into your self expression and your craft is what brings your unique flare into the beauty of fashion, design, and artistry. He writes:

“El arte es la expresión del alma que desea ser escuchada.”

- Julio Cesares

Giving root to the truth that each work of art demands the audience interact with the soul of the artist reminds us why we do what we do. We want to share not only our story but the story of our people and the history of our craft. We wanted to give a spotlight for not only the generations of souls that got us where we are - but the people who believe in a future made for individuals that respects the past and is truly unique.
