Classic Lessons from Mexican Luxury Leather goods.

Celebrating nine years of J.L. Rocha

We’ve learned countless lessons and shared many moments throughout these nine years in luxury leather goods all of which have made us a better brand and help us make better choices. We’ve seen the impact of positive investment in people and in processes for both quality of life and quality of craft. Ultimately, while there is still a ways to go, we want to celebrate lessons we’ve learned with you as we prepare for our 10 year anniversary in 2022. Let’s begin:

Celebrating 9 years of lessons.

With the J.L. Rocha Classic Collection

Lesson 1: Be fluent in your craft.

We know Mexico from our family history, from our experiences, and from our work. Our experiences help us cut through the challenges of communication and presentation while getting down to truth. One of the largest truths we’ve encountered is the the reminder that experts are experts for a reason. While speaking with master craftsmen, artisans, and alike we’ve learned to respect their command of their craft as they respect ours. Each design that we bring forward is workshopped with our master artisans in Leon, Guanajuato. We discuss all the technical matters and details necessary, while making sure we promote concepts of ingenuity and luxury. Our fluency in the language, culture, and craft allows us to navigate through the production process without compromising quality or ideals.

Each lesson brings us a step closer

Lesson 2: Quality over quantity.

Mexico has the capacity to create exceptional luxury leather products, yet the crafters of these exceptional products are few and far between. While our family focuses on highly skilled artisans taking their time to work in a detail oriented fashion, we’ve found that all too often there is a shock associated with producing less. Sadly, a common concept in Mexico is the idea of payment based on output rather than on merit. The larger difference between the two is that when artisans are paid by output: this usually requires that the artisans work at haphazard speeds and low quality to make the most of an already exploitative pay. When it comes to crafting, organic material, and hardware we’ve found that the best way to work is by giving time and respect to the process.

Honoring the value of Mexican Leather Craftsmanship

While honoring traditions and celebrating individuality.

Lesson 3: Luxury is knowledge.

Knowledge represents the true measure of luxury, because of the privileges it affords us. When you have a clear understanding of the things that truly make a difference: you can enjoy luxurious items with confidence. Just like a fine wine or spirit, a refined palate is needed for all luxury experiences; the same refined palate is needed to produce all luxury goods. We’ve spent generations honing, learning, and re-learning what luxury means: a lesson that often results in a stark reminder that to be Classic is to be refined, and to be refined is to be closer to luxury. Truly remarkable products or experiences come from the simple verve of wanting to showcase a distilled essence, our mission allows us to extrapolate that essence and to share it with you: the value of truly luxurious Mexican leather goods, made with time and focused on the details.

Closing Notes:

These lessons may not be nuanced or ground breaking, but they are classic lessons. We carry them in our hearts and continually use them as grounding for our trade. We encourage you and others to ponder on them and let them be a driving force: live with a desire of mastered fluency, work with a focus on quality, and hold your knowledge close as your greatest luxury.
